Course Summary

The aim of the research seminar is to give students basic tools for the writing of essays and other assignments given during the programme, and to prepare themselves for discussions. Introduction to basic issues and methods, with an emphasis on scientific writing and the use of literature.

 

Course Objectives

  • To become familar with the process of doing original research and writing an academic research paper in English
  • To understand main research methodologies and techniques
  • To develop and focus knowledge on a key issue in the Arctic today

Assignment

  • 5-10 page research paper or research proposal (if also taking Research Seminar II).
  • participating in research seminar discussions, and critiquing the other students' papers.

 

Choosing a topic

Any current issue in the Arctic today can be used as a reseach topic. You might start by looking through the Arctic Human Development Report and Arctic Climate Impact Assessment for ideas of these major issues, especially areas that are mentioned as 'gaps in knowledge' or requiring further research.
